Yavneh Academy, located in Paramus, New Jersey, held its 12th Annual 5K /1 Mile Fun Run on Sunday, November 13, at the Westfield Garden State Plaza. The Benjamin Schwartz Memorial 5K Run and 1Mile Fun Run/Walk is named for the brother of Yavneh parent and JLNJ co-publisher Mendy Schwartz and drew over 1,000 people who helped to raise nearly $45,000 for Yavneh Academy scholarship needs.
“The 5K Run is absolutely one of my favorite dates on the school calendar. I love the fact that it promotes healthy living, motivates our children and school families to stay active, and fosters incredible school spirit!” said Rabbi Jonathan Knapp, Yavneh Academy head of school.
“The run brings families, friends, neighbors, staff and many others from all parts of the Yavneh world together for a great morning and helps our scholarship fund. Perhaps more importantly, every year there are numerous first time runners that fall in love with the sport, one of the best exercises out there,” commented Mendy Schwartz.
Participants of the event were treated to a pre-race workout with Donna Riker of HNH Fitness in Oradell, T-shirts and a buffet breakfast generously sponsored by local restaurants and businesses. The event, organized by Amy Buchsbayew of Teaneck and Yavneh Academy Director of Development Robin Tare of Englewood, culminated with the presentation of medals to the top runners in the various age categories. Congratulations to the overall winner Isaac Markel, age 23, from Teaneck, who came in at 17 minutes and 9 seconds.
