Yavneh Youth League (YYL) concluded its biggest season ever, with the 2016 Season Championships played on on the morning of Father’s Day, June 19.
On behalf of the players, the league wishes to thanks its administrators, coaches and parents who both believe in and reinforce the YYL values that make the league great.
Below are summaries of the championship games:
YYL Junior Girls Champions: Paul Family Pirates
The Pirates entered the playoffs as the 4th seeded team, facing an undefeated Treetop Development Athletics team. After upsetting the County Draperies Yankees, the Pirates were playing loose with ‘house money.’ The Athletics, always tough, always ready, (and always cute) had their hands full. Behind their power hitting and solid defense, the Pirates took a 10 run lead into the bottom of the last inning. The Athletics fought back but could not stage the full comeback. In the end, the Paul Family Pirates claimed the JG Championship.
YYL Junior Boys Champions: 8th Day Caterers Royals
The #1 seeded MYRAJ Media Mariners hosted the #2 seeded Royals in a JB Championship matchup powerhouse. Having beaten the #3 MORRE-TEC Industries Inc Blue Jays in the semis, the Royals were battle tested. These teams had met earlier in the year, with the Mariners scoring the win, thus securing the better playoff seeding and home field advantage. In a championship that felt like it should have been played as a 3 games series, the Royals applied consistent scoring inning after inning, slowly building a lead. In the end, it was too much for this Mariners team and the 8th Day Caterers Royals took the Junior Boys Championship.
YYL Senior Girls Champions: Gutfreund / Risk Strategies Twins
The #3 seeded Twins held off the #4 seeded Center for Dermatology Orioles until the top of the 6th inning, when the Orioles showed great heart and posted 5 runs to tie it up, but stranded the go ahead run at 3rd base. With home field advantage, the Twins had the last shot and made the most of it. They put some base runners on and systematically moved them into scoring position. With a walk off hit, the Gutfreund / Risk Strategies Twins own the YYL 2016 Senior Girls trophy.
YYL Senior Boys Champions: Zadies Bake Shop Brewers
This was the last game of the season, and maybe the best. The Rothenberg Law Firm Reds hadn’t won a game this year until Memorial Day weekend, when they swept a doubleheader. They entered the playoffs as the last seeded team and pulled a huge extra-inning upset in the quarterfinals over the CoolKippahs.com Cardinals, to move to the semis. On championship morning, they played the #6 seeded Noodle.com Mets in the most unlikely semifinal game YYL has seen in a while and following a gritty hardfought game, the Reds edged the Mets 4-3.

Simultaneously, the 7-1 Brewers were playing in their semi-final against the cagey DiConza Traurig Kadish LLP Diamondbacks. The Brewers poured it on and walked away with a 10-0 win and felt poised to make light work of their next opponent and claim the big trophies. Not so fast. The Reds reached back for something extra, and led throughout the game. The Brewers staged a heroic comeback in the late innings, and the game went into extra innings. Playing two consecutive eight innings games, the Reds showed the heart of a champion. With the sidelines full of families and friends, the Zadies Bake Shop Brewers ended it in the bottom of the 8th inning with a walk off single, claiming the Senior Boys Championship.
