The Yeshiva Alumni Basketball Association will be holding their second annual dinner, May 14, 2015 at 6 PM at Congregation Ahavath Torah, at 240 Broad Ave, in Englewood New Jersey. This year’s class of honorees will be: Marvin Teicher MTA Class of 1952 A”H, Dr. Allen Helfer BTA Class of 1953, Aaron Grandison YHSQ Class of 1973, Andrew Weitzen RJJ Class of 1974, Dr. Jerry Stahl Rogosin Class of 1975, Barry Berg MTA Class of 1976, Susan Rifkin JEC Class of 1981, Zach Mishaan Flatbush Class of 1984, Dr. David Ruchelsman Frisch Class of 1996, Stepanie Amos Central Class of 1998, Max Feldstein Ramaz Class of 2010 and Richard Hagler, League Commissioner.
When asked about her playing days at JEC, Susan Rifkin described it as “a magical four years of high school basketball.” Rifkin was a freshman the year that the varsity team started. The team had tremendous talent and got along well, compiling a 55-4 record and earning 3 Championship titles during those four years.
In the early eighties there were very few yeshivas with female teams- Rogosin (Bayonne), Frisch, Ramaz, Central Manhattan and Queens, Bas Torah, Hili, Hillel (Long Island precursors to HAFTR). Mr. Ira Budow, coach of Rifkins team, scheduled games for them with Marylawn, Montclair Kimberly, and Pingry, among other non-league schools. During Rifkins time at JEC the one yeshiva league loss was in the championship game against Hili before a Nets game, at the RAC.
All proceeds raised by the Yeshiva Alumni Basketball Association event will go to help Yeshivah Kfar Zeitim (in Tiberias) pay for the YABA Mitch Merlis(A”H) Basketball Court we helped build.
