YU Sets Program Record for Runs-in-a-Game
The Yeshiva University baseball team earned its first two wins of the season, both over Vaughn College at Palisades Park. The Maccabees won the first game 11-7, while winning the second contest 21-4. Yeshiva’s 21 runs in the second game are the most runs scored in a single game in the history of the program. The previous record was 19 runs scored in 2009 against NYU-Poly. Yeshiva won that contest, 19-17.
In the opening game, Yeshiva scored seven runs in the first inning. Junior shortstop Josh Gurin drilled an RBI triple, scoring sophomore pitcher Ari Schanzer. Gurin also scored, thanks to a sacrifice bunt by junior infielder Shmuli Goldis. Senior infielder Etan Bardash produced an RBI single in the frame.
Vaughn scored two runs, but when Schanzer hit an RBI single with two outs, scoring freshman catcher Eli Profeta, the score climbed to 8-2 in favor of the Maccabees. The Vaughn Warriors scored 3 runs in the top of the 4th to slice their deficit in half. In the home half of the 6th, senior first baseman Zachary Perl drove in a run on a single, scoring Schanzer. This extended Yeshiva’s lead to 9-5. Junior outfielder Chaim Rosenberg produced an RBI on a groundout in the frame.
Vaughn scored two more times in the top of the 7th, but Schanzer got Jonathan Hernandez to strike out looking, clinching Yeshiva’s first win of the season.
For the game, Schanzer went 2-for-3 at the plate, scored two runs, drove one in and stole a base. On the mound, he earned the complete game victory, striking out nine batters in seven innings pitched.
In game two, Yeshiva once again played a strong first inning, scoring 6 runs in the opening frame. The highlight of the inning was a 2-run single produced by junior pitcher Rephael Rosenberg. Chaim Rosenberg also managed an RBI during the frame.
After Perl led off the 2nd with a triple, Goldis drove him in with a single. Gurin followed up with a triple of his own, which scored Goldis. Sophomore utility player Mordechai Cohen put a cap on the inning by producing an RBI single to make it 9-0, Yeshiva (2-26).
After Vaughn (1-7) scored two runs in the top of the 3rd, Yeshiva answered with 8 in the bottom frame. Goldis hit an RBI single on two separate occasions in the inning. Chaim Rosenberg, Cohen and senior outfielder Binyamin Bromberg each produced a walk with the bases loaded, earning one RBI each.
Rephael Rosenberg ended the game by getting Amfrey Sanchez to strike out swinging; he helped the Maccabees earn the sweep.
For the contest, Rephael Rosenberg earned the complete game victory, striking out six hitters in five innings pitched. Perl went 4-for-5 with 2 triples, 4 runs scored and 2 runs batted in. Goldis also went 4-for-5 with 4 runs batted in and 2 runs scored. Schanzer added 3 hits with 3 runs scored and 2 runs batted in, while Gurin had 2 hits. Profeta drilled a double, and senior first baseman Benjamin Barman produced a single.
