New York—A new joint program between Yeshiva University’s Yeshiva College, Stern College for Women and Wurzweiler School of Social Work will enable aspiring social workers to begin working towards their master’s degree as undergraduates, graduating with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in the field in five years.
“This program enables students to begin their graduate study in their senior year by taking courses at Wurzweiler School of Social Work,” said Danielle Wozniak, the David and Dorothy Schachne Dean of Wurzweiler. “In five years, they leave Yeshiva with an excellent education and an exciting and important career. Our work as social workers is the work of repairing a fractured world. I can’t think of any profession more important than this, and I can’t think of any students better prepared or more qualified than those who receive an education from Yeshiva University.”
The BA/MSW program consists of three years of undergraduate study and two years of graduate coursework and fieldwork and is certified by the Council of Social Work Education. As undergraduates, students at Stern College and Yeshiva College create a major based on their interests and requirements at their respective schools. During their senior year, students begin full-time studies at Wurzweiler on the Wilf Campus; a portion of these credits also count towards their bachelor’s degree. Courses include Jewish social philosophy, social work values and ethics, psychosocial pathology and cultural diversity.
Students are also placed at a social services agency, where they work professionally with clients for 21 hours per week under the intensive supervision of a licensed social worker. In the program’s final year, students complete advanced fieldwork in a specialization area of their choice.
For Stern College students interested in pursuing careers in social work, there’s even more good news: students who enroll in the BA/MSW program will be eligible for a generous scholarship to support their studies, thanks to a generous bequest of $222,000 from Sandra Goldberg. Enrolled students can be awarded a $5,000 scholarship upon the completion of their undergraduate degree and are then eligible for additional scholarships through Wurzweiler.
