(Courtesy of yumacs.com) The Yeshiva University men’s soccer team earned its second consecutive victory by defeating Southern Vermont College, 2-1, at Overpeck Park last Wednesday evening. The Maccabees advance to 2-1, while the Mountaineers start the season 0-3.

The difference in the match occurred in the 61st minute, when senior defender Shlomo Amsellem took a feed from classmate Eli Richards and drilled the ball into the net, from outside the box, for the game-winning tally. It was the first goal of Amsellem’s collegiate career. The scoring sequence occurred thanks to Yeshiva drawing a foul. Senior defender Joseph Grobman executed the free kick that deflected off a Southern Vermont defender and right to Richards, who set Amsellem up for the tie-breaking goal.

“We played really well last game (against Green Mountain College), creating many chances and controlling the match. But tonight, we showed that we have the players who are willing to dig in and fight for a result too,” Yeshiva University head coach J.J. Davidson said. “With so many players out injured, and others rotating into positions that are new to them, it was always going to be difficult to play free flowing football. But the guys put their bodies on the line and gave everything they had and I couldn’t be happier with their performance.”

For the match, Southern Vermont had the edge in shots, 12-8, and a heavy advantage in shots on target by a 7-1 margin. Freshman goalkeeper Edgar Schottland stopped all seven opposing shots on net to earn the first shutout victory of his young collegiate career. The Lima native has only given up two goals in his first three matches on the college level and has stopped 19 out of 21 shots in three contests this season.

Southern Vermont had nine corner kick opportunities, while Yeshiva had five.
