The Yeshiva University men’s soccer team earned a key Skyline Conference victory over Maritime College, 3-2, at Reinhart Field on Wednesday evening. This marks the first time in history that Yeshiva has defeated Maritime.
The Maccabees (2-7-1, 2-5-1 Skyline) scored three goals in the first half, but Maritime (5-6, 1-3 Skyline) would respond with two in the second. Yeshiva was able to settle down and hang on to earn the conference win.
Just three minutes into the match, freshman forward Albert Dichy received a feed from senior forward Itamar Ben David and snuck the ball past the Maritime goalkeeper to give YU an early 1-0 advantage. Sophomore midfielder Dan Cohen was credited with the secondary assist.
In the 24th minute, Ben David connected with freshman forward Netanel Silberman, who rifled the ball into the back of the cage from 25 yards out to extend Yeshiva’s lead to two goals. Silberman would strike again, just over 10 minutes later, as he received a pass off a free kick by sophomore defender Joseph Grobman and launched the ball into the right side of the net to give the Macs a commanding 3-0 advantage. That would be the score at halftime.
The Privateers would not go down without a fight, as Maritime scored two goals in a span of 13 minutes to narrow Yeshiva’s lead to 3-2. In the closing minutes of regulation, YU had a strong chance of extending its lead, as sophomore forward Julian Ribak hustled down the field with the ball, but his shot was stopped by Maritime goalkeeper Michael Rodriguez. The Privateers had an opportunity to tie the match, but Anthony Sblendorio’s shot went wide right, with just three minutes remaining. Time eventually ran out for Maritime, as Yeshiva was able to hang on and earn its second Skyline victory of the season.
For the match, shots were even at 18 apiece, while Yeshiva had six that were on goal compared to Maritime’s five. The Privateers had the edge in corner kicks, 6-2. Junior goalkeeper Maor Feinstein made three saves.
