Idioms have been dominating the fifth grade conversations at Yeshivat He’Atid. While reading “The Phantom Tollbooth” by Norton Juster, the students had fun playing with the idioms which are heavily used throughout the story. Idioms are commonly used phrases that don’t really mean what they seem to mean. Many authors use idioms to make their writing more interesting. Would you rather read about a bull in a china shop,’’ or just someone who is “clumsy?’’ As a culminating project, the students were tasked with photographing visual representations of the literal and figurative meanings of the different idioms found within the story. The students had fun making time fly, hitting the road and creating a heart of gold.
