Yeshivat He’Atid’s sixth-grade Chumash class was honored with a Zoom guest speaker, Rabbi Shlomo Weissmann of the Beit Din of America.

The students are learning about יתרו  in Chumash and how he made a suggestion to Moshe about picking judges and having multiple courts. The students learned about what types of people were fit to be judges and what character traits they needed to have in order to qualify. The students also learned about the breakdown of courts and which types of cases would go to Moshe and which would go to other courts, as well as the differences and similarities between the Jewish court system and the Supreme Court. The students learned about the Jewish court (Beit Din) first hand by speaking with Rabbi Weissmann. They learned about the types of cases judged by the Beit Din, and what it is like to serve in a Jewish court. Rabbi Weissmann also spoke with the children about a recent case that he just sat for as a judge. It was an incredible experience for the students and truly brought their learning to life through real-world application.
