On Thursday, Yeshivat He’Atid commemorated Yom HaShoah. After tefillah, students in grades 1-6 gathered for a brief ceremony which included a candle lighting ceremony, followed by students joining together to sing Hatikvah and Ani Ma’amin before returning to class.
Following the ceremony, the middle school participated in an educational program which focused on four reasons why it is important to remember the Shoah. Students watched a short video about the history of the Holocaust which was then discussed in small groups. A second video, highlighting Sir Nicholas Winton, a righteous gentile who saved more than 600 Jewish children, was shown.
As a follow-up to the story of Sir Winton, students discussed hopes for their personal legacies. Each student was given a Magen David with the words “Never Again” which they adorned with their personal commitments and hopes for leaving a positive impact on the world. The program concluded with the topic of faith. They discussed how the Shoah can help strengthen emunah in Hashem that the Jewish people will continue to survive and thrive as a nation.
