Yeshivat He’Atid Second Graders Explore Poetry

The Yeshivat He’Atid second-grade students are so excited to complete their poetry anthologies! As part of a very special poetry unit, the students learned about rhyme and meaning in poetry and how to infer a poem’s underlying message and express the feelings it evokes. The students were introduced to various literary elements including rhyme and the regular beats that create rhythm. Students learned to identify words and phrases in poems and songs and describe how this language builds meaning and rhythm. Students learned that poets choose their words carefully and often pick words that are very descriptive to paint an image for the reader and help connect with the poem on a deeper level. The students were exposed to various types of poetry including alliteration, quatrain, triplet, concrete and haiku poetry. Upon learning each new poetic category, the students were tasked with becoming poets themselves and creating their own poetry writings. Each student’s poems were compiled into a personal poetry anthology that will surely become a second-grade keepsake.
