In sixth grade advisory, students spent time learning about the idea of respect. The students attempted to define respect and then compared it to the dictionary definitions. There was a fascinating conversation linking the traits you respect in others with the traits you may respect within yourself. Students wrapped up the lesson with a very insightful understanding about the difference between self respect and bragging.
The second part of the respect unit focused on the importance of respect in sports. The students quickly identified that respect is a crucial part of competition. Indeed, many famous sports figures have shared the importance of respect for the game, their teammates and their opponents. Students then researched sports figures they respect and cited meaningful quotes from those athletes. What a great way to start off advisory in middle school!
