As a culminating activity to their study of determining the volume of rectangular prisms, the fifth graders were tasked with creating their own cities. The cities needed to include roads, a park or play area, and buildings to accommodate the needs and wants of a city. They were responsible for calculating the perimeter of the park/play area, the area of the roads and the volume of all the buildings. The students showed a lot of creativity in their choices of buildings. Who would have thought that volume could be so fun?
