Women’s Initiative for Jewish Studies (WIJS) at Young Israel of New Rochelle is proud to present Dr. Magda Teter on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at 8:15 p.m. (EST) on Zoom. She will be the first speaker of the 2023-2024 season in the monthly scholarly programming offered by WIJS at YINR.
Dr. Teter will speak on the topic of “Christian Supremacy: Reckoning with the Roots of Antisemitism and Racism.” In 2017 in Charlottesville, antisemitism and anti-Black racism converged as white supremacists, in a highly choreographed and violent protest against the removal of a statue honoring a Confederate general, carried Confederate flags and chanted “Jews will not replace us.”
In her lecture, Dr. Teter, the author of “Christian Supremacy: Reckoning with the Roots of Antisemitism and Racism,” will explain the deep roots of the connection between antisemitism and anti-Black racism. Dr. Teter will also explore the interplay between Christian theology and law to demonstrate how legal and theological frameworks, created centuries ago, have led to the creation of social hierarchies, legal exclusion of and a denial of equality to Jews and Black people which continue to exist in modern times.
Dr. Magda Teter is a history professor and the Shvidler Chair of Judaic Studies at Fordham University, as well as the president of the American Academy of Jewish Research.
