College student Sara Schatz is spearheading the drive in memory of her grandmother, Mary Schatz. Three summers ago, Sara was partnering with the American Red Cross to run a blood drive as part of their Leaders Save Lives college scholarship program, when her grandmother, Mary Schatz, passed away. Inspired by her grandmother’s devotion to chesed —and in particular, her grandmother had run many blood drives—Schatz decided to hold a drive every summer around the time of her grandmother’s yahrzeit. Sara commented: “Because she was such a modest human being, and because our family isn’t that large (I’m the only granddaughter), it’s personally been a really fulfilling and enjoyable way to keep both her legacy and exponentially impactful message of giving, alive.”
