Growing list of signatories testifies to this historic and expanding initiative.
(Courtesy of YU) Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman, president of Yeshiva University, has taken steps to cut through the political and ideological divide in the world of higher education by spearheading a coalition of more than 100 university and college presidents who have signed on in clear support of Israel in the war against terrorism and Hamas.
A full-page ad in this past weekend’s Wall Street Journal, sponsored by the coalition, showcased this critical undertaking, listing the comprehensive range of signatories representing public, private, faith-based, and historically Black colleges and universities that have united in support of one powerful cause: Universities United Against Terrorism.
The coalition was launched in response to the brutal terror attacks in Israel perpetrated by Hamas on October 7, the joyous Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah. Since its founding, the alliance has earned widespread attention across the academic and business worlds, as well as among elected officials and journalists, gathering momentum and quickly evolving into a dynamic movement.
“The massacre in Israel put a spotlight on campuses and the role university presidents have in articulating the values that higher education represents,” said Berman. “There is unparalleled strength in presidents joining together to lay the moral groundwork on which all civil dialogue is naturally based. I am honored to stand with the other signatories of this statement who are committed to bringing clarity and truth to these tumultuous times, protecting our campus communities from violence and hate.”
Berman continues to draw more universities into the coalition, creating a counterweight of conscience and decency in stark contrast to Hamas’ brutal attacks and the wave of antisemitism surging across college campuses. The coalition provides a moral compass that can so vitally guide America’s campuses in the pursuit of truth during this challenging time.
Berman also underscored the gravity of this critical juncture. “We are in the middle of a ground war. Our hearts, minds and prayers are with each and every soldier in the field defending our homeland in this moment. In this battle, we are all called to service, and we do what we can wherever we are,” he said. “As we move forward, let our hearts remain steadfast, our devotion unwavering, and our support for Israel stronger than ever.”
