YU Scholars to Speak at YI of Stamford Family Beit Midrash

(Courtesy of YU) Rabbi Jeremy Wieder, rosh yeshiva at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary at Yeshiva University, and Rabbi Hayyim Angel, tanach instructor at Yeshiva University and national scholar of the Institute for Jewish Ideas and Ideals, will each be giving a holiday shiur via Zoom as part of the Young Israel of Stamford’s Family Beit Midrash Program.

Rabbi Wieder will speak about “The Fascinating History of the Kol Nidre Prayer” on Tuesday, September 22, at 8 p.m. Rabbi Angel will speak about “Explaining the Contradictions in the Book of Kohelet” on Wednesday, October 7, at 8 p.m

“When the coronavirus closed down our shuls, we were forced to suspend the Family Beit Midrash Program at the Young Israel this past spring,” said Michael Feldstein. “Given the program’s popularity, we decided to bring it back this fall via Zoom, and launch the program with two shiurim centered on the holidays. Rabbi Wieder and Rabbi Angel are two of the most respected teachers in the Jewish community, and have been very well received when they have spoken here in the past. We are fortunate to be able to bring them back to Stamford.”

Rabbi Jeremy Wieder is Yeshiva University’s Joseph and Gwendolyn Straus Professor of Talmud in the Mazer Yeshiva Program, and serves as a rosh yeshiva at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary and an adjunct professor of Bible at Yeshiva College. He is a prolific scholar, with more than 900 lectures on Judaism captured on audio and video and available online. Rabbi Wieder was one of the first Americans to win the International Bible Contest. He graduated summa cum laude from Yeshiva College in 1991, and received an MS in American Jewish history from the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies. He was ordained at RIETS, and holds a PhD in Judaic studies from New York University.

In addition to his role at Jewish Ideas and Ideals, Rabbi Angel teaches advanced Bible courses to undergraduate, graduate and rabbinical students at Yeshiva University and lectures widely. He also serves as the rabbinic scholar at Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun in New York. He has published over 100 scholarly articles, primarily in Bible, and is the author or editor of 13 books. He received his B.A. in Jewish Studies summa cum laude from Yeshiva College, his M.A. in Bible from the Bernard Revel Graduate School, his M.S. in Jewish Education from the Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education, and his rabbinical ordination from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University.
