Teacher’s Corner:
One of my students shared with me: “I feel uncomfortable speaking out in Hebrew when class is in session.” I asked her, “Why do you feel that way?” She said, “Because I’m afraid of embarrassing myself.” I suggested to her that she take it one step at a time. “Each week let’s focus on making a small change in your behaviour and hopefully that will lead you to a big change so you won’t feel the fear of embarrassment.” I encouraged my student to share a short sentence with the class every day.
A few months into the year, she started to feel very confident with speaking out without being asked. At the end of the year, when I asked each of my students what they got from Hebrew class, she answered confidently in Hebrew: I’m comfortable sharing my thoughts and I’m not concerned about what others may say about me.
Sometimes all we need is a small change; a daily investment towards something big.
We don’t have to take some massive, lofty action. Small changes can be just as powerful as big ones, and sometimes even more powerful. Why? Because they’re more sustainable and they accumulate over time. Small changes, when given consistency, yield big results.
Big changes may seem awesome, and they can be, but most of the time they fall flat; they’re not sustainable to the point that they become a habit. So ask yourself what in your life would you want to change? What small step can you take today to get there?
