Regarding the article “Why you don’t need a 4WD or AWD this winter” (September 19, 2024) I have found 4WD/AWD to be especially beneficial if you are driving on unplowed snow that is at least 3 to 5 inches deep, or in lesser amounts of unplowed snow or even on plowed streets if you are traversing a moderate to steep grade. The article states that no one goes anywhere in the snow anymore. I say that people travel to a lot of places in the snow or on poorly treated streets, including to work, school, and shul. As such, if you need to go out before the streets are plowed, like to shul to daven, or after a storm on poorly cleared streets, like to work or school, or you have a steep road or driveway on your winter route, then it makes sense to have 4WD/AWD. Also note that switching to winter tires for the winter is critical for both 2WD and 4WD/AWD vehicles, as it will improve traction for both acceleration and braking, as well as for turning. In conclusion, I find the reasons listed in the article for not getting a 4WD/AWD vehicle to be a disservice to the readership.
