Linking Northern and Central NJ, Bronx, Manhattan, Westchester and CT

Dear Shayna B.,

I have really annoying neighbors. They are very loud and keep me up. Their lights are very bright and don’t let me sleep. This is always a problem, but was especially annoying during Succoth. What should I do so I can be happy at home?

Disturbed Dandelion

Dear Disturbed Dandelion,

I’m sorry to hear you are having such nasty neighbors. Here are my suggestions. You can move. I hear Antarctica is pleasant this time of year. Probably not many neighbors to worry about. If this isn’t the place for you, maybe the North Pole. You would probably have fewer neighbors there so no bright lights or loud sounds. You might have to avoid the polar bears, but not annoying neighbors at least. You don’t like that one any better? Ok, so as bad as your neighbors are, there are worse places you could go. You can try ignoring your neighbors. Perhaps, though, a nicer idea would be to try the opposite—talking to them. If they have someone your age it’s an especially good idea to give it a chance. They may not know they’re doing things that bother you. If you tell them, they might be more considerate. Be friendly. You don’t have to fall in love with each other, just be able to get along without disliking one another. Anyway, if your neighbors still have you pulling your hair out, Antarctica is still an option.

Best of luck,

Shayna B.
