Troubling Response in Israel

Last week was an extreme low for close watchers of Israel here. Your paper listed the awful terror activity that involved one, or sometimes two, Arab gunmen. It described a “mob of Israeli youths” who “went on a rampage through the Palestinian village” after one of the deadly attacks.

It did not, however, include any proper mention of this unprecedented revenge response of a reported 400 Israeli settlers who took the two deaths torched Huwara, an Arab village and caused an Arab death by settlers in Zaatara. And it never included the Israeli government warnings against that revenge response.

Finally, it did not include the local responses by the OU and the RCA condemning that revenge.

Rabbi Moshe Hauer, executive vice president of the OU, stated: “How can such a thing happen? How could it come to this, that Jewish young men should ransack and burn homes and cars?… What happened yesterday must never, ever happen again.”

Our people committed what used to be called a “pogrom.”

And your paper really suffered a very troubling loss on this matter.
