Spotlight on My Extended Family

My Extended Family, under the auspices of the Teaneck Chabad House, is making a great impact on families in our communities. Many would benefit from knowing more about their services.

How and when did this organization get started?

The organization began in 2020.

Who is eligible for your program and what are your goals?

Any child from a single parent family between the ages of 6 and 12 is eligible.

Our goal was to create a program where children from single parent families don’t feel different. They know that everyone in the program “gets them” and they feel understood.

As an aside, we also have a licensed social worker on our staff. Amy Birman helps both the children and our staff when services are needed. The program is a win/win for everyone involved. The children get individual attention and develop a positive relationship with their “Big Sibling.” The parents get 90 minutes of respite while their children get supper and homework help.

Please share an anecdote that highlights the work that you do.

This was sent to us by one of our parents, and will highlight the work that we do: “Every Tuesday at 6:20 p.m., when the carpool beeps the horn, my children run with speed lighting. I have never seen them run out of the house so fast, even when they hear the bells of the ice cream truck! This only happens every Tuesday so that they can attend your program. They adore their big sisters/brothers and look forward to this every single week. You and the amazing big brothers and sisters who make this happen are making such a difference in these children’s lives. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Another anecdote: One of the children in our program had to be cajoled into coming and she appeared with her arms folded, appearing as if she obviously did not want to be here. Eventually she let her guard down and now thoroughly enjoys coming and her mother reports that she has totally come out of her shell and has become much more confident and happy altogether. Her mother attributes this to her involvement in our program.

What volunteer opportunities, if any, can community members sign up for?

We are always looking for high school students to sign up to be a big brother or sister. Please contact Rabbi Simon for further information.
