Diplomacy Day 2018 began on the bus to the United Nations where students were briefed on the history of the “idea” of the United Nations. Established in the wake of two twentieth century World Wars that killed millions, world leaders were inspired to work together to end all wars through cooperative efforts. As the students toured the building, they were moved by the extensive humanitarian work that brings health care, education, food, relief from of poverty and peacekeeping throughout the world. They learned about the important UN programs on Holocaust education and the UN observance of Holocaust Memorial Day.
Next, students visited the French Consulate, where they learned about its responsibilities and the challenges and hopes of France under its new young president, Emmanuel Macron. Two visiting French students at SAR addressed the Consul General in French and inquired about anti-Semitism in France past and present. The Consuls explained that the French government is resolved to fight anti-Semitism and is dedicating great resources for education and security.
The next stop was the Consulate of the Republic of Korea (South Korea), a mission representing one of the most important global challenges of our day. Students received a detailed history of the country and then heard from Consul General Ambassador Hyo-Sung Park, who spoke about the commonalities between the Korean and Jewish people regarding shared values of learning and family and strong and flourishing Korean/Israel relations. He described this extraordinary “peace moment” in North and South Korea’s sad history that divided the land and families, and witnessed the death of over two million people. Today’s rare opportunity was brought about by North Korea’s participation in the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Games, and he is hopeful for. “real progress” at the April 27 Korean summit, being planned in close coordination with the U.S. After a fascinating Q & A where they asked thoughtful and insightful questions, students perused an exhibit of decorated helmets and posters from artists from around the world celebrating the PyeongChang Olympics, as well as traditional Korean clothing.
It was an amazing experience for SAR students to receive first hand knowledge of this critical global challenge at this historic moment and a fitting introduction to the world of diplomacy!
