My dentist recommends that I get braces. I don’t want them. They look funny. I understand they are uncomfortable to have put on and annoying to wear. How can I convince my parents not to make me get them?

Dear Reluctant Rhonda,

I understand that wearing braces might be hard, but they’re for your own good. Don’t be nervous about wearing them. All of your concerns are reasonable, but it’s not the end of the world. Many people have them and they’re not complaining. I agree that at first it can be uncomfortable, but they’re also pretty. I have glasses and some people might call people who wear glasses”four eyes” but I call them lucky people who get to wear jewelry on their faces. So there are many ways to look at things. Are you going to take the bitter with the better?
