A Conversation With JLIC’s Rabbi Jonathan Shulman

Rabbi Jonathan Shulman

The College in Israel Fair, scheduled for November 11 in New Jersey, is an exciting event for high school students and parents interested in exploring higher education opportunities in Israel. To learn more, The Jewish Link sat down with Rabbi Jonathan Shulman, director of Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus (JLIC) in Israel. JLIC, a program of the Orthodox Union, focuses on enhancing Jewish life and learning on college campuses and communities across Israel. Rabbi Shulman’s role involves supporting students who choose to study in Israel, making him uniquely qualified to discuss the upcoming fair and the broader landscape of higher education in Israel for international students.

Jewish Link: Rabbi Shulman, thank you for joining us today to discuss the upcoming College in Israel Fair. Can you tell us about the main focus of this event?

Rabbi Shulman: Thank you for having me. The College in Israel Fair is primarily focused on showcasing the wide range of degree programs that students can pursue in English at Israeli universities. We’ll also highlight opportunities for students to transition into full Hebrew programs if they wish. This event is a fantastic opportunity for high school students and parents to explore world-class education options in Israel.

What types of programs and universities will be represented at the fair?

We’re excited to have representatives from top institutions like Ariel University, Bar-Ilan University, Ben-Gurion University, Hebrew University, Jerusalem College of Technology (JCT), Reichman University, Technion, Tel Aviv University, University of Haifa, and more. These universities are on the cutting edge of medicine, technology and scientific research. Attendees will learn about dozens of degrees taught in English, spanning various fields of study.

What are some of the key benefits of studying in Israel that you’d like attendees to know about?

There are numerous benefits. Firstly, Israeli universities offer world-class education with unparalleled post-college job placement rates. Importantly, tuition is often a fraction of the price of U.S. schools. But academics are just part of the amazing opportunity. Students will enjoy a welcoming community from the moment they arrive, with JLIC staff ready to help them find their footing. They’ll experience a melting pot of cultures from Australia, South Africa, Europe, Canada, South America and the U.S. And let’s not forget the sunniest beaches and the tastiest falafel on the planet!

Our goal is to ensure that students feel connected, supported, and part of a vibrant community during their time in Israel. We help create an environment where students can thrive both academically and personally while deepening their connection to Jewish life and Israel.

What kind of information can attendees expect to gather at the fair?

The fair is designed to help people get answers to many common questions. Attendees can expect to learn about the admissions process, options for living on or near campus, and the cost of schooling. They’ll also get insights into the vibrant communities eager to welcome new students. Representatives will be available to discuss the transition to life in Israel, the balance of academics and cultural experiences, and the unique opportunities each institution offers.

Are there any specific advantages to pursuing a degree in Israel that you’d like to highlight?

Absolutely. Besides the high-quality education, studying in Israel offers a unique cultural immersion experience. Students have the opportunity to learn Hebrew, even if their degree is in English, which can be a valuable skill. The international environment on Israeli campuses provides excellent networking opportunities. Plus, the lower tuition costs combined with high academic standards make it an attractive option for many students.

How can interested students and parents sign up for the event?
