Linking Northern and Central NJ, Bronx, Manhattan, Westchester and CT

This is definitely a man’s meal which you won’t be able to resist yourself! This steak sandwich is epic and incredibly simple! Whether you buy the BBQ sauce or make this homemade recipe (though come on, homemade always tastes better than store bought) this will definitely be a dinner favorite. Serves eight.

Ingredients:

For sandwich:

  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 4 packages Philly steak sandwich meat
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • about 1 cup prepared BBQ sauce, divided (recipe below)
  • 3 large purple onions, halved and thinly sliced
  • 1 jalapeño, thinly sliced (optional)
  • 8 ciabatta rolls
  • 4 cups shredded lettuce

For sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 2 teaspoons mustard powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Gefen Worcestershire Sauce (fish-free)
  • 1 cup cider vinegar
  • 2 and 1/4 cups brown sugar, packed
  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 2 and 1/4 cups water

Procedure: For sauce: Add oil and garlic to a large pot and sauté over low heat.

Add tomato paste, allspice, smoked paprika, mustard powder, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes, and stir to combine. Add the molasses, vinegars, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, tomato sauce, and water to the pot. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat, and allow mixture to simmer until it has reduced by half (about an hour).

For meat and veggies: Season meat very lightly with salt and pepper. Working in batches, drizzle a little bit of oil on the bottom of a frying pan and set over medium-high heat. Add enough meat to fill the pan but do not over-crowd it. Cook the meat in the pan, constantly moving it around so that all of the pieces get cooked (45–60 seconds). Remove from pan and then continue with the rest of the meat. Return all of the meat to the pan and add 3/4 cup of your prepared BBQ sauce. For sautéed onions: Add oil, onions, jalapeño, salt, and pepper to a frying pan over medium heat, stirring constantly until onions are golden brown. Add BBQ sauce near the end of cooking.

To assemble sandwiches: Top ciabatta rolls with some lettuce, a huge pile of meat, and onions. Serve hot and enjoy!
