What a week.

It’s not lost on us, during this time when we celebrate the hard-won, much-prayed-for 50th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem, that Donald Trump, the president of the world’s most powerful nation, would pray at the Kotel, the iconic symbol of that reunification. He is the first sitting president to visit the Kotel.

A year ago, we could not count on that fact that the previous administration would even have Israel’s back, much less bring such comfort and immense joy during an official state visit.

The president prayed on the men’s side at the Kotel, paid homage to the six million lost at Yad Vashem and addressed the entire nation from the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. There, President Trump called Israel “a testament to the unbreakable spirit of the Jewish people. From all parts of this great country, one message resounds, and that is the message of hope.”

He ended with the words, “I stand in awe of the accomplishments of the Jewish people, and I make this promise to you: My administration will always stand with Israel.”

Indeed, Israel has grown into one of the world’s leaders in so many areas, including technology, medicine, agriculture and education. It is now, still, the safe haven and homeland for world Jewry. Indeed, Jews from France and Venezuela are now actively seeking the safety and opportunities it offers.

Many of our older generations never thought they’d live to experience davening at the Kotel and walking through the streets of our sages and ancestors. Yet the dream is now reality, and this reality continues along with, as the president noted, the hope.

May every day for our children and future generations be a Yom Yerushalayim.
