Academies @ GBDS Third Graders Learn About Taste Buds

Dr. Yasmine Kalkstein came to teach third grade about different taste buds on their tongue. The students learned about the five tastes: bitter, salty, sweet, sour and umami. Everyone in the class ate tomatoes, lemons and drank orange juice. The students rated how sour each food item was on a scale of one to five. After that students tasted miracle fruit and rated it again. Everyone was very surprised by the results and noticed that their taste buds altered! Dr. Kalkstein showed the third grade students how to find the class averages and graph the data. Dr. Kalkstein is an associate professor of psychology at Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh and received her PhD from the University of Minnesota in educational psychology. Academies @ GBDS third grade students learned so much from Dr. Kalkstein and had the best time!
