Acclaimed Author Speaks at MTA

On November 17, MTA sophomores met with Craig Morgan Teicher, a poet, literary critic, journal editor and educator. Teicher is the author of four books of poems, including “The Trembling Answers” (BOA, 2017), which won the 2015 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize from the Academy of American Poets. He serves as a poetry editor for The Literary Review and writes for many publications, including The New York Times Book Review, The LA Times and NPR. Teicher’s visit was part of the sophomore English poetry curriculum. Prior to Teicher’s visit, students read and analyzed poems and critical literary essays. During the visit, Teicher read a few poems from his most recent poetry collection, “Sonnetville, New Jersey.” The second half of the event was interactive—students asked a wide array of insightful questions, ranging from questions about the craft and meaning of poetry (“What makes poetry different from other kinds of writing?“; “Why does the poem you read include so much repetition?”) to pragmatic questions about overcoming writer’s block and getting published. All told, it was a successful event!
