ADVICE FROM A KID FOR KIDS

Dear Ariella B.,

I feel I get less attention from my parents because I am well behaved. My siblings do things wrong and get attention. I feel this is unfair. I’m even jealous at times. What can I do to change this dynamic?

Resentfully,
Good Girl Gila

Dear Good Girl Gila,

I understand how it may be hard for you if your parents seem to be giving attention to your siblings instead of you.

Are you sure that it’s all good attention? Would you like to be bad getting bad attention or would you rather be good getting good attention?

Tell your parents how you’re feeling. I’m sure that they will be glad you did and try to fix your problem. I’m sure they would like to reward your good behavior.

Ask your parents to set aside a specific time during the week each week that they just spend with you. It doesn’t have to be a lot of time, but just knowing that you get all of their attention during that time might make you feel better. If you still feel like you’re invisible to your parents you can always move in with your grandparents. I’m sure they’d be happy to shower you with love and affection; just ignore the dentures on your nightstand.

Until next week,

Ariella B.
