Ahavath Torah’s Dor L’Dor To Screen ‘Daniel Deronda’ On Two Afternoons

Join Dor L’Dor on two consecutive Monday afternoons, Jan. 27 and Feb. 3, at 1:30 p.m. to watch the multi-part film “Daniel Deronda.” Parts one and two will be shown on Jan. 27, and parts three and four on Feb. 3. Coffee/tea and snacks will be served. The screenings will take place at Cong. Ahavath Torah, 240 Broad Ave., Englewood.

“Daniel Deronda” is based on a novel written by English author George Eliot, pen name of Mary Ann Evans, first published in 1876. It was the last novel she completed and the only one set in the Victorian society of her day. The story is built on the contrast between Mirah Cohen, a poor Jewish girl, and the upper-class Gwendolen Harleth, who marries for money and regrets it. The hero of the story, Daniel Deronda, grows through discoveries about himself that deeply influence the rest of his life.

The story is full of intrigue and surprise, revelation and discovery that captivatingly draws the viewer into the heart of the plot. The novel had a positive influence on later Jewish Zionism and has been cited by Henrietta Szold, Eliezer Ben Yehuda and Emma Lazarus as having been influential in their decision to become Zionists.

There is no charge for either date, but please RSVP: [email protected] or call Eileen at (201) 921-0630. The event is open to the entire community.
