Asher Strobel, z”l, Remembered At Annual Memorial Basketball Tournament

The Asher Strobel Memorial Tournament had its 10th annual gathering this past Sunday. Run by Asher’s friends for the past eight years, the tournament boasted 48 teams and over $8000 raised for charity. This year, after it was toned down by COVID, my friends and I took it over and have begun building it back up. Two years ago we had 12 teams and now, thank God, we’ve expanded to 16 teams, and raised over $4000 for charity. The team of Zevi Samet, Noam Kinderlehrer and Ezra Barron, won bragging rights over Max Zahkeim, Alex Zahkeim and Gabe Einhorn.

It’s such a successful day because it’s just a bunch of friends getting together, playing some great 3 on 3 with some great gear to take home and enjoy. The tournament this year was only open to high school seniors and college-aged players, which evened out the competition and enabled everyone to compete at the highest level. Next year we will hopefully look to expand to more teams and ages.

The funds raised are in memory of my brother אשר דוב בן ראובן אפרים who was a light unto everyone he met. The money goes towards the Asher Strobel Leadership Program which enables high school seniors to enhance their connection to Judaism on a trip to Poland, through the East Hill Synagogue in Englewood.
