A&P and Pathmark to Close Dozens of Stores
A&P and Pathmark owners have filed for bankruptcy. Cheaper shopping options such as Wal-Mart and Costco, as well as specialty stores like Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods created stiff competition for the chains, which have operated on older models of grocery shopping, with many departments and store brands offered, but without the big box store prices or unique specialty items. A spokeswoman for the company said that the company plans to sell as many of its stores as possible, and intends to close the locations that cannot be sold over the next few months.
Dozens of A&P and Pathmark stores in the New Jersey area are expected to close within the next few months including the Clifton, Edison, and East Brunswick locations. Additionally, the Pathmark in Bergenfield is expected to be sold to Acme, one of the companies that is buying many of the stores.
