March 2 is a day to celebrate literature and the joy associated with reading. To mark this special day, the entire school came together to read. As a continuation of the geography initiative, they actually read stories from all 50 states! The program began with a sing along of “This Land is Your Land” as images from around the country flashed across the screen. Then, Mrs. Maron read “The Scrambled States of America,” by Laurie Keller to help get everyone ready to read across America. The students thought that it was hysterical when the states chose new locations on the map! After the read aloud, the students paired up with their reading buddies and read picture books together. Each book was marked with the state where it took place. There was a hum in the room as each pair sat side by side and enjoyed the words and pictures in the books. It was heartwarming to watch the younger students as they looked up to their older buddies who read to them. The BPY fifth graders and middle schoolers took such care of their younger reading buddies, making sure that they could see the pictures and enjoy the books. The next time that you pick up a children’s book, see if you can identify what state it is set in. Happy reading!
