This past Thursday, BPY kicked off its annual middle school mishmar program! The students enjoyed the Nosh and the Drash presented by Rav Edward Prince. For their first session, they reviewed the Mishna (Mishna Berachot 1:4) in which Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah admits he could not justify saying the third section of the Shema at night until Ben Zoma explained it to him. They noted that this Mishna is also found in the Pesach Haggadah and learned both why it was an issue at all and what it is doing in the Haggadah. The program concluded with a fun game in which the students tested their eye-hand coordination and ability to anticipate. This was followed by a traditional (Ashkenazi) snack of kugel and cholent.
