Ben Porat Yosef second grade students visited a beit knesset in Paramus, where Rabbi Grossbaum taught them all about how a sefer Torah is made. Each student had the opportunity to read his or her pasuk from a real sefer Torah, under the guidance of Rabbi Bassous. The students also experienced the art of being a sofer, as they learned to write their Hebrew names on a klaf with a quill and ink, using the same instruments and parchment as a sofer. Not only will they know how to read from the Torah, but the students will also have experienced how a Torah is written and prepared. This activity is a part of the students’ preparation for their upcoming Mesibat Chumash.
