BPY Students Prep for Pesach

Ben Porat Yosef students in all the grades are continuing to prepare for Pesach and even to use themes from the chag to learn science, math and writing concepts. Kindergarten students extended the theme of dipping in saltwater by performing an experiment. They put both a plain cup of water and a cup or salt water in the freezer and made predictions about which cup would freeze faster. In the process, they learned about experiments and predictions, and also about the effect of salt on ice and the freezing process. As an extension of their learning about yachatz, the students created paper matzot, cut them into pieces and used the “greater than” and “less than” symbols in math statements to indicate which pieces were larger or smaller. In connection with the Ma Nishtana, the kindergarten students were encouraged to ask questions. They then used these question words of “why,” “what” and “where” in their journal writing, and searched the class morning message for question words and question marks. They also donned goggles in order to grate maror. BPY second grade students studied the Haggadah and then went about experiencing the story by donning costumes and acting out some of the important scenes. The students were excited to learn about how Bnei Yisrael started to evolve into Am Yisrael, beginning the process with Yetziat Mitzrayim.
