Last week Wednesday, the BPY fourth graders traveled about 400 years into the past to view a Lenape Native American village called Winakung, meaning Place of Sassafras, at Waterloo Village in Stanhope, New Jersey. They walked the land as the Lenape did years ago, seeing wigwams and longhouses throughout the terrain, sassafras trees blooming, food storage areas dug to preserve fish, meats and other edible items, cooking areas and food preparation spaces. The students’ excitement was palpable as they experienced Lenape life through playing with toys created from natural resources, trying to make fire with a wooden and string contraption, and crushing corn into a fine powder used for cooking. Seeing the replicas of Lenape homes, people, storage containers, jewelry, toys, games and fishing instruments was a perfect celebration of the knowledge the fourth graders gained during their Native American unit.
