The curtains have closed for the season on Bruriah’s Culture Club to resounding applause! The last event the club attended was the New York City Ballet’s production of “Sleeping Beauty.” The club gathered for a private backstage tour and Q & A session with a company dancer. Sitting in the magnificent theater, the students listened in awe to the dancer’s story and her explanation of the history of “Sleeping Beauty” and paid close attention when she mentioned her favorite parts of the show. Everyone was shocked to learn that a single dancer can go through more than two pairs of shoes a day! Following the lively question and answer session, the group moved backstage, where they peered into dressing rooms and marveled at the beautiful props. The wonderful first part of the program ended with a picture on one of the most famous stages in New York City.
Then it was time for the performance, which surpassed all of the students’ wildest dreams. The costumes were colorful and breathtakingly exquisite, and of course the dancing was unforgettable. Students were stunned by the dancers balance of weightless strength and grace. It was an incredibly uplifting day, and as one student remarked, “It was an unforgettable, inspiring experience unlike anything I had ever done before. I’m so glad that Bruriah has such an amazing club where you can immerse yourself in culture alongside your friends and teachers!” The school especially thanks beloved English chair and club coordinator Margueya Poupko, who organized and orchestrated each club event. All are looking forward to next year’s events, which are sure to be just as amazing as this year’s!
