Bruriah Special Education Elective Holds Sensitivity Workshop

Bruriah’s Special Education elective invited Shira Schwartz from Yachad to lead a sensitivity workshop. The students participated in several hands-on activities that simulate what it’s like to live with a wide range of disabilities, from dyslexia to autism. Students were asked to try to copy designs while seeing them reversed through a mirror, to complete classwork while under distracting conditions and to build a toy model while dealing with sensory overload. Another activity had the group writing answers to a series of questions. What the students did not know was that half the class got easy questions to answer, but the other half had much more difficult work. Those students were able to get a taste of what it feels like when others catch on to things more easily and do things more quickly. By understanding the feelings of people who have different abilities, camp counselors, shul group leaders and future parents and teachers are able to become more sensitive in their interactions with people of different abilities.
