(Courtesy of Camp Kanfei) Since the onset of COVID before the summer of 2020, traveling has been complicated. For a travel summer program like Kanfei, which for the 27 years has travelled to New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii and California, figuring out travel destinations has been particularly challenging. However, despite the challenges, Camp Kanfei has managed to pivot as needed and run their amazing adventure travel programs. In the summer of 2020, during the height of COVID, Kanfei ran camp in Lake Placid, Lake George and the The Finger Lakes. Last year, as the COVID situation eased slightly, Kanfei travelled to Alaska, Hawaii and the Western USA.
This year, although much of the world is beginning to open up, Kanfei again was faced with the challenge that New Zealand, their primary ski destination is still not open (although Australia is). Therefore, Coed Kanfei and All Boys Kanfei again have pivoted to explore new frontiers and will be travelling to ski in Chile, as well as to explore amazing hiking, jungles, rafting and beaches in Peru and Costa Rica. (Bnos Kanfei is returning to Alaska and Hawaii.) According to Rabbi Scheinfeld, the director of Kanfei programs, Chile is a stunning country, and the ski areas are world class. In fact, the last time Rabbi Scheinfeld skied in Chile he rode the lifts alongside the Canadian Olympic Ski Team that was down in Chile for summer practice. Besides the skiing and wonderful Jewish community in Chile, the idea of visiting one of the world’s most unique tourist destinations in Machu Picchu and enjoying the stunning beaches and scenery in Costa Rica make Kanfei South America a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Although Kanfei is popularly known as a post-10th-grade program, it is actually open to high school students grades 9-12. This is true every year, but especially this year, as many juniors and seniors who may have not traveled the past two years are welcome to join Kanfei South America. Kanfei has provided adventure, challenge, growth, spirituality and ruach in the most unique and beautiful settings for the past 29 years. This year it seems Kanfei may be taking that uniqueness to another level as it explores the amazing South American countries of Chile, Peru and Costa Rica.
