The OU put out this statement about the recent Supreme Court decision in Dobbs: see the full letter on page 59.
“The Orthodox Union is unable to either mourn or celebrate the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. We cannot support absolute bans on abortion—at any time point in a pregnancy—that would not allow access to abortion in lifesaving situations. Similarly, we cannot support legislation that does not limit abortion to situations in which medical
(including mental health) professionals affirm that carrying the pregnancy to term poses real risk to the life of the mother.”
OU’s Statement is factually inaccurate. The law at hand clearly addresses these concerns. See for example, https://legiscan.com/MS/text/SB2116/2019
These protections may not be exactly as OU would prefer, but to release a statement and insinuate, as the OU does, that Mississippi does not protect the mother is blatantly dishonest. To quote Orwell, “the greatest lie is the omission of the truth.”
I recognize that the OU is trying to create a moral equivalency between the Democratic and Republican positions to show evenhandedness, but to put out this statement without even researching, or quoting the law at hand, is wrong.
