Comic Books for Tzedakah at Yavneh

On Wednesday, the Yavneh library was transformed into a miniature comic book convention with over 1,000 titles for students to purchase. The entire 5th grade, under the leadership of Mrs. Sherman, Mrs. Tannenholtz, Mr. David, Mrs. Abrahamson, and Mrs. Ricklis worked together to promote and carry out an extremely successful fundraiser to benefit the children of Sderot.

Most of the collection consisted of Archie comics, but there were many super hero, Richie Rich, Simpson, Disney and other comics available as well. The children came rushing into the sale with smiles on their faces as they searched through all of the comics. Many children stopped, opened a comic, and started reading immediately. Graphic novels and comics offer much to readers of all ages, and in this case the comics offered much to the children of Sderot. While more money from this successful fundraiser is still coming in, as of the latest count close to $700 has been raised. Thanks to Rabbi Penn, Mrs. Heilpern, Lenny and Wilson for all their help.

Interesting Fact: In the 1950s, the average child was reading 30 comic titles per year instead of the 1.5 titles per year today.
