Dancing Through Parkinson’s And Caregiver Support Groups at Kaplen JCC

(Courtesy of Kaplen JCC) The Kaplen JCC on the Palisades in Tenafly is excited to introduce a new, innovative program designed to support those living with Parkinson’s disease and their care partners. Beginning this month, the JCC will offer Dancing Through Parkinson’s classes, providing a unique and comprehensive approach to managing the challenges of the disease.

Led by Dance for PD®-trained instructor Jamie Desser, the Dancing Through Parkinson’s classes will bring together a variety of dance and movement styles, helping participants improve balance, movement, flexibility and coordination. The class will incorporate choreographic routines that engage the body and mind, fostering an environment where individuals can thrive physically and emotionally. These classes are tailored to all levels, offering an inclusive space for participants to explore movement in a fun and supportive atmosphere. As Desser explained, “Bergen County hasn’t had a dance program for Parkinson’s, and people have had to commute to New York City for it. We’re excited to finally provide that opportunity right in our community.”

Additionally, the JCC will offer a monthly in-person support group that will provide a safe and welcoming environment where care partners can come together to share their experiences and challenges and receive emotional and practical support, all while reducing the feelings of isolation.

“Statistics show that a million people in the U.S. live with Parkinson’s,” said Marlene Ceragno, director of caregiver services and outreach. “For years, I’ve been receiving calls from people asking if we have a Parkinson’s program. I am now thrilled to be able to say ‘yes,’ and excited to offer these new resources.” This program represents a long-awaited opportunity to offer vital support within the community.

This eight-week pilot program of dance classes will meet every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. starting Jan. 15. The JCC is thrilled to have the ability to help improve the quality of life for individuals living with Parkinson’s and their care partners.

The JCC invites the community to join them in this enriching and supportive program and they look forward to helping build a stronger community through dance, movement and shared understanding.
