Doubletree Lancaster: Unique Sukkot Accommodations

The DoubleTree Lancaster

The Jewish Link interviewed Lisa Sellers, director of sales & marketing at DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Hotel Lancaster, one of the main hotels that have accommodated Orthodox Jews over Sukkot who are visiting Hersheypark. The hotel is around a 45-minute drive from Hersheypark.

Can you tell me how the DoubleTree by Hilton in Lancaster began accommodating Jewish guests for Sukkot?

It all started with a group called Friends of Israel. They needed kosher meals, and as the director of sales & marketing, I was looking for a way to meet their needs. I connected with Sally Gerstein to help provide the meals. During our conversation, Sally brought up the idea of having a sukkah and mentioned how Hersheypark was a big deal for Jewish families during Sukkot. That’s when I thought, why not give it a shot? We started small. Sally brought the food, helped arrange the sukkah, and even brought a rabbi. Each year, it kept growing. We had more guests, more services and the event has become something we’re proud of.

Do you remember when this tradition started?

Honestly, I don’t remember exactly when we began doing this, but it’s been several years now. Every year has gotten bigger and we’ve learned a lot along the way.

Can you share a bit of the hotel’s history? Have there been any milestones or significant changes?

Our hotel is operated by Willow Valley, which has a rich history in this area. It all started back in 1968 when the Thomas family owned a small 16-room motel. Willow Valley became known in the community through their presence at the Lancaster Central Market—the oldest farmers’ market in the United States—where they sold chicken. Over time, the hotel continued expanding the property, adding amenities like a pool, tennis courts and a bakery.

As the property grew, it eventually became the Willow Valley Convention Center, featuring two hotels: the Willow Valley Suites and the Atrium Building. In 2011, the Atrium Building was converted into the DoubleTree by Hilton. Both hotels operated separately for about a year, but in 2012, the Willow Valley Suites, which had 165 rooms, was torn down. The tennis courts were also removed in 2011, and that land was transformed into a commercial storefront area.

Today, the property consists of the DoubleTree, which has 185 rooms, and the convention center. Willow Valley continues to serve as our management company. Many guests are drawn to the area for its Amish attractions, adding to the local charm and appeal.

What inspired the hotel to set up a designated area for a travel sukkah? How has this evolved over the years?

Initially, it was all about providing a comfortable experience for our Jewish guests who needed kosher meals and a place to celebrate Sukkot. Over time, we realized how important it was to have a designated area for the sukkah. We started with just a small one, and now we have set up multiple sukkahs with tables and chairs, ensuring they’re conveniently located. It’s grown into something special that our guests really appreciate.

How do you ensure that your hotel’s amenities and services are accommodating to Jewish guests during Sukkot?

We offer a variety of accommodations, including kosher continental meals, prayer services and separate swim times for men and women. We have sukkahs on the property but if guests want more options, there’s also one about 10 minutes away on Columbia Avenue. Most people usually go to Hersheypark during the day and then return to the hotel in the evening. It’s busy, but it’s wonderful. We sell about 100 rooms, hosting around 700 people each year.

What has been the feedback from Jewish guests who have stayed at your hotel during Sukkot in the past?

The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Our guests love it and are so happy to have a place where they can enjoy Sukkot in a beautiful setting. They appreciate the effort we put into making the experience feel special. We have gorgeous grounds, walking trails, a pond, and even a 9-hole golf course, so there’s plenty for families to enjoy during their stay.

Can you share any memorable experiences or highlights from past Sukkot celebrations at the hotel?

I remember when we first started this, I was honestly shocked by the whole experience; it was new to me! But each year, we’ve learned and improved. Sally has been an amazing help throughout this journey. One highlight for me was realizing just how big the event could get. We had to cut it off at 100 rooms because any more than that, and we wouldn’t be able to accommodate everyone’s specific needs. It’s been a learning experience.

What’s your favorite ride at Hersheypark?

I’m not much of a roller coaster person, but I love the Ferris Wheel. It’s big, high and gives you the best views of the park.

Do you have any tips for those planning to stay at the hotel during Sukkot?

Definitely book early! We’re already sold out for this year. The rooms went fast, quicker than they ever had before. Unfortunately, we won’t be doing the event next year, but you can look ahead to 2026. So, make sure to plan ahead!

Zack’s personal note: I stayed at the DoubleTree with my family in 2018, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast each morning, which we were able to eat in the sukkah. There were also convenient minyanim at the hotel that we attended. The workout room was well-equipped, and I got in some great sessions. As a runner, what stood out to me was the beautiful golf course surrounding the hotel which made for a scenic running trail. Best of all, there’s a giant water slide in the pool area which my brother Gabe and I went down multiple times!
