Friends ‘Til the End … Not!

Dear Dear Shayna B.,

First of all, I love your column and read it every week! I am having a problem with my friend Malkie. Malkie used to be my best friend, but now she is being mean and hanging out with other people who are “cooler” than I am. Now Malkie is mad at me, and she won’t let me sit with her at lunch. How can I convince her that I’m a faithful friend?

Sincerely,
Begging Batya

Dear Begging Batya,

It seems this may be the end of your friendship. You guys had a good run. You can make new friends and all that. Malkie is being difficult because she doesn’t want to be friends. I’m sorry if l am laying this on too thick, but the facts are the facts. Anyway, I digress. You can be friends with that girl who sits next to you in math class, or the girl whose locker is right next to yours. Of course you should include Malkie, because that’s what it means to be the bigger person.

Making friends with people is hard. Making friends with people who don’t want you is harder.

Shayna is a sixth grader and knows what kids in elementary school and middle school are going through.
She can be reached at [email protected]. She’s looking forward to hearing from you!
