Immediately after finalizing plans for my family’s first Passover program, I sighed a breath of relief. I knew there was a great deal I didn’t know about the Passover program world, but there was one thing that I did know. Someone else was running the show, literally and figuratively.
I had been making Pesach for many years, and as anyone who has done so knows, there are so many pieces and moving parts to coordinate. It’s overwhelming, because like moving, at a certain point a switchover happens and if you do it too early, it’s annoying because you’ve positioned yourself in the Pesach zone too early. However, if you wait too long, you’re hustling to pull it all together in time to cook, get the car washed, polish off that last bagel and shake off the crumbs before biur chametz.
I was happy to know, internalize even, that I, for once, wasn’t the “cruise director.” Meaning, that other than not having to worry about food planning (and let’s be honest, we still brought some nosh because I’m a Jewish mother), I hadn’t really given much thought to the idea that it’s not just about someone else cooking, setting up and cleaning up after each meal — which is definitely amazing.
There is so much more to Passover programs. If it was just about the food, people could stay home and order catered food. It’s about the whole experience. Passover programs offer a vast and diverse array of experiences for adults, kids, families and singles. Program runners want guests to truly enjoy themselves and come back, excited to return for another chag that they can be sure will be equally, if not more amazing, than the last.
So let’s talk about accommodations and amenities. From the rooms and suites to the gyms, spas and pools — indoor, outdoor — you are going to enjoy where you are staying. Leisure Time Tours Arizona’s Falls Water Village features acres of scenic waterfalls, a 138-foot enclosed water slide for guests to adventure, and several shaded cabanas so guests can choose an adrenaline rush or a mellow lounge in the sunshine while taking in the scenery. Sites like passoverlistings.com streamline learning about and viewing these amenities, as they have them listed and display pictures on each program’s page.
For my first time attending a Pesach program, I’ll be honest. I was excited to just get away and not “make Pesach.” Once I arrived, though, received my itinerary and welcome basket and settled in, it was really nice to see how much fun and entertainment had been planned for and awaited me and my family. Comedians, concerts, parties, bubble shows, puppy parties, carnivals, speakers, shadchan meet-ups and events, wine tastings, tea rooms, cocktail hours, “Chopped” competitions, local activities and excursions, different cultures, beaches, chefs who artistically and meticulously plan menus and presentations for you to enjoy.… It’s really incredible.
Kosherica guests are, and I’m containing my jealousy here, to be enchanted by the witty humor of viral comedian Yochai Sponder. There is just so much! Until you’ve experienced it, it’s difficult to describe. This is all to say there is so much to get excited about.
Program hosts plan and choreograph a world for you to soak up, but then, aside from that, there is so much more. On one program I was on there were impromptu kumzitzes around the lobby piano. Another time, women, inspired by a shiur they had just attended, created their own spin-off shiur on Yontif while we waited for kiddush to be ready on the terrace. Volleyball games, hikes, boat rides.… At these programs you meet other guests and because people on these programs are generally all open to having a good time, these types of groupings with “strangers” just sort of happen and you really make new friends.
Learning more about this world has opened my eyes to the different types of experiences guests can enjoy, from different continents, venue types and styles. On passoverlistings.com, I discovered Melour Resort, nestled in the picturesque New York Catskill mountains, which offers guests a heimish, rustic luxury experience. Outdoor saunas, fire pits, porch swings, outdoor playgrounds, and separate men’s and women’s swim times all serve to immerse guests in a Pesachdik mountain lodge experience.
Next, let’s talk about the belle of the ball: FOOD. Most programs aim for guests to not just enjoy the food, but really be wowed by it. They want to not just give you a break from cooking, but really delight in the creations their chefs present. In Miami, Lasko Getaways prides itself on their high-end, luxurious, indulgent culinary offerings presented by JM Food Events & Design. Having been in the business for over 35 years, they place a great emphasis on taste and design (not to mention other incredible amenities like Tidal Cove, their on-site five-acre waterpark boasting water rides and slides and a relaxing lazy river). Athens Greece Passover program Kosher Culinary Travel boasts over six restaurants and bars, including a beach bar and grill for fries and other hot snack food cravings, fast food concept restaurants, pool ice cream and cocktail bars, 24-hour tea room, separate dairy and meat restaurants, and beyond. If you’re drooling at this point, no judgment!
Passover Programs aren’t just about one thing. They offer tons of exciting and novel experiences and amenities that are designed to make you and your family smile. You are meant to enjoy the food, entertainment, classes, venues, and holiday moments and memories that you will look back on fondly for years to come. The truth is everyone has different things to look forward to. We all have different things that make us feel rejuvenated, refreshed, delighted and at peace.
What’s great about these programs is that whether you want to sip a cocktail by the beach or learn how to make one in a class, to spend loads of time with your kiddos, or enjoy some me time reading or sleeping while they have a blast and are taken care of by kids’ group counselors, to indulge in fast food cravings or be wined and dined by culinary masters and wine pairings, you pick what you want.
The best part is that it doesn’t matter who you are or what you choose — it’s gonna be great.
