Glatt Express Supermarket:

Better than Ever and Still Growing

Shopping at Glatt Express Supermarket in Teaneck brings to mind that old children’s memory game: I went to the store and I bought some apples…and bagels, chicken and deli….All these items and so much more are available in the recently refurbished store on Queen Anne Road, giving the kosher consumer the opportunity to find products from A to Z under one roof; one-stop shopping made easy.

Glatt Express was the first kosher supermarket in Teaneck, established 28 years ago to serve the ever-growing Jewish communities in Bergen County and neighboring towns, and Tammy Secemski, a young housewife and mother of five, was one of the store’s best customers. Three years ago, with Tammy’s children now all in high school and college, she realized her lifelong dream of becoming an entrepreneur.

“I can remember it as if it was yesterday. It was a Wednesday morning and I called  my husband at work and said, ‘Let’s buy Glatt Express…’”

And so, with her family’s blessing, it all began. Glatt Express is presently the only supermarket in Teaneck, to be owned by a woman who happens to be a local Teaneck resident, and our neighbor.

Tammy’s unique woman’s touch soon effected many changes in the general appearance and organization of Glatt Express. The store is brighter now with new lighting and cheerful tiles. And the aisles have been widened. Beautiful Roses and floral arrangements line the walls every Erev Shabbat and yom tov. Along with their groceries, shoppers can choose prepared delicacies from the store’s redone gourmet takeout section where all the food is prepared on premises by a master French chef. Since the meat section, managed by Mordechai, a butcher with 30 years experience, now features a wide variety of specialty and prime cuts of meat, many professional chefs also buy their provisions at Glatt Express. Of course, one can’t forget the delicious and expanded menu in the Lazy Bean Café just next door, where the tired shopper can regroup or just hang out with friends. Most importantly, Glatt Express has managed all of these innovations without raising their prices and remains competitive with the national chain supermarkets.

As a community member, Tammy Secemski takes her responsibilities very seriously. “I try whenever possible to support our local establishments by featuring their products in our store,” she explains. Her many acts of chesed are also numerous.

“It is our policy that no local tzedakah is ever turned away and, in fact, all charitable institutions receive a 15% discount for their purchases. We are also happy to contribute to the organization 24/7, which provides kosher meals to local hospitals.”

Not one to rest on its laurels, Glatt Express supermarket is planning an expansion to begin after Pesach which will further improve traffic flow in the store and allow for an even greater variety of products. Make sure to visit soon and you, too, can say,

“I went to the store…and I bought EVERYTHING.”
