Grateful for ‘Noise’ of Children

I read the letter from Name Withheld in “Lots of Noise in Shul” (November 17, 2022) with both dismay and embarrassment. I wonder if the person next to me in shul has the same ill-placed sentiments. As the uncle of two nonverbal nephews, I cherish every word or sound uttered by children. You don’t know what a feeling it is to finally, at 4 years old, hear my nephew start talking, and eventually be able to repeat the Shema out loud. Granted, we must teach our children and adults as well (talking business, sports etc.) the proper decorum in shul, which can be achieved by example as well as instruction. This can be accomplished without admonition. Do not ever forget the 1.5 million children permanently silenced by the Nazis. Many of these children were tragically suffocated by their parents while trying to silence them to prevent the Nazis from finding those hiding.
