On Sunday, May 17, the West Orange community will have the rare opportunity to fulfill the mitzvah of k’sivas Sefer Torah, the writing of a Torah scroll, at Congregation Ohr Torah, 270 Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange. The Torah, commissioned by Lilyan Wien and family in memory of Asher Wien, will be completed by the sofer and members of the Wien family and the greater community. Steve and Meryl Wien and their children and grandchildren, Kerry and Evan Bell, Lindsay, Andrew and Lauren, live in West Orange. Their other children, son Adam and daughter-in-law Bat El, and son Jason, will be in attendance as well. This is truly a special event and it is a wonderful opportunity for everyone, adults and children, to share in this simcha. This is also a terrific occasion to educate children about the writing of a Sefer Torah.
The filling in of the letters to complete the Sefer Torah will take place from 9 a.m.–11:30 a.m. The chuppah procession will follow, welcoming the new Wien Torah into the shul, accompanied by music by Bnai Jazz, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Anyone who purchases a letter dedication will be with the sofer as he fills in “their” letter. Pictures will be taken of each person or family with the Sofer. Following the completion of the Torah, there will be a luncheon with dancing and music, open to all who have pre-registered on the Ohr Torah website.
